While whiplash and other forms of trauma are commonly associated with neck pain, a bad posture can also set that pain in motion.

Neck Pain ImageHow Poor Posture Creates Neck Pain

If you sit at a desk all day, you are probably familiarly with backaches. It seems odd that a sedentary job can cause joint and muscle pain, but it does because poor posture and sitting for hours on end can put extra strain on the upper body. The muscles and bones aren’t getting the needed amount of movement and exercise.

Poor posture isn’t only affecting the back. The way the spine curves and how the head is positioned can determine the stress on the neck.

What’s the Worst Posture for the Neck?

Do you hunch over? Well, that might be what is causing the discomfort in your neck. Letting the shoulders and head hang forward puts stress on the muscles and vertebrae of the lower neck.

If head or neck movements cause pain or the discomfort continues after changing your posture, a professional evaluation is recommended. The Total Health Chiropractic and Wellness Center can examine the neck pain, help you identify the underlying cause and treat it.

Many of us crack our necks in hope of some relief. Dr. Kenneth Clenin wants Memphis chiropractic patients to realize that it may not be the best choice for neck pain relief. If you are a “neck cracker,” you most likely suffer from some sort of mechanical joint dysfunction. Stress, work, driving, and daily activities can cause stiffness in the joints of your neck or back. As your body feels the stiffness, all you have to do is a simple turn of the neck, and pop! But this is a habit you don’t want to start. Cracking your own neck can be dangerous. Chiropractors are trained to manipulate the joints, and they understand the best practices to promote healthy, functioning joints.

When you pop your neck, the joints above and below move more to make up the difference. When done frequently, you are just temporarily loosening the segments that are already loose, not the ones that are stuck, so those joints may become loose and can lead to more problems in the future.

What to Expect From a Chiropractor

When you see a chiropractor for your neck pain, it’s important to remember that the adjustment frees, not forces, your vertebra to allow it to find its natural position. Some common chiropractic adjustment techniques include:
  • Instrument adjustments: Involves spring-loaded devices
  • Lumbar roll: Dr. Clenin applies a firm, yet quick thrust to a misaligned vertebra while you are lying on your side.
  • Motion palpation: A hand technique to determining if the vertebrae are properly aligned.
  • Release work: A gentle pressure is used with fingers to separate the vertebrae.
  • Table adjustments: You will lie on a specially designed table that drops when pressure is applied to a specific area of your neck.
  • Toggle drop: Firm pressure is applied on a specific area of the spine by using crossed hands.

Adjustments do not usually involve any pain or discomfort. Remember to stay relaxed and don’t be frightened if you hear popping sounds, it’s usually just pockets of air being released behind a joint or bony structure. Adjustments have been proven to:

  • Increase blood flow
  • Increase pain tolerance levels
  • Increase range of motion
  • Increase the body’s secretion of “good” chemicals
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Reduce tension and muscle pressure

back and neck pain memphisBack and neck pain are two of the most common conditions that plague Americans. But because these conditions are common, this does not mean people have to live with them. That’s the message Kenneth P. Clenin, CD, CCRD, CSCS, a Memphis, TN chiropractor, shares with his patients.

As a chiropractor in Memphis, Dr. Clenin focuses on helping patients find relief from pain without the need for painkillers or invasive procedures. Through employing chiropractic adjustments coupled with strength and conditioning, patients can find relief from their back and neck pain in Memphis.

The Types of Back and Neck Pain

Dr. Clenin sees several different types of back and neck pain at his Memphis, TN chiropractic office. The first type is the patient experiencing acute pain. This could occur if a patient has experienced a traumatic injury, such as a car accident or sports injury.

The other pain type is chronic pain, which is pain a patient may have experienced for two months or more and is unrelated to an injury. Causes of chronic back pain can include disc herniation, where a protective and cushioning disc slips out of place in your spinal column and presses on the nerves in your spine. Another common cause is lumbar degenerative disc disease. This occurs when a spinal disc starts to wear down or becomes inflamed, which can press on the nerves in your spinal column and cause pain in your back and neck.

Osteoarthritis is another back and neck pain cause. Arthritis occurs when cartilage starts to deteriorate, causing the bony surfaces of your spinal column to rub together, causing pain. This affects your range of motion and causes stiffness. While arthritis was previously associated with being a disease only for those of advanced age, people are experiencing arthritis at younger and younger ages.

The good news is, regardless of the cause of your neck and back pain, chiropractic treatment can help to address the issue. Most causes of back and neck pain have something to do with misalignment of the spinal column. Chiropractic services focus on making adjustments that can restore alignment and blood flow to your spine and the areas of your body where pain radiates.

In addition to spinal manipulations or adjustments, Dr. Clenin emphasizes supportive therapies, such as stretching, exercise, nutrition and ultrasound. These can serve as long-term lifestyle solutions to pain and discomfort instead of quick or temporary fixes.

“Each patient’s back and neck pain truly is different, which is why it is important to have multiple tools available for treatment,” Dr. Clenin explains. “Chiropractics focuses on a total-body approach. This means I look at not only alleviating a patient’s back and neck pain, but also strengthening the structures it supports and vice-versa.”
